Cincinnati, Ohio - The Fontbonne University women's soccer team opened their 2014 season by winning a pair of games this weekend in Cinncinnati, Ohio. The Griffins defeated Mt. St. Joseph University 2-1 on Friday then quickly turned around and beat Berea College 5-0 on Saturday. Fontbonne is 2-0 on the season.
Friday night Fontbonne surrendered an early goal on a corner kick to fall behind Mt. St. Joseph College 1-0 in the 14th minute. The Griffins however didnt panic and continued to take the game to the Lions. Fontbonne was rewarded in the 39th minute as senior Kayla Thorpe scored the tying goal on an assist from sophomore Kelly Hobbs. The game went into halftime tied 1-1.
In the second half, Fontbonne continued to control the game but couldn't find the back of the net. The Griffins outshot the Lions 6-2 in the second half. The game went into overtime before Fontbonne found the game winner in the 106th minute. Hobbs redirected a Paige Pfankuch dead ball into the back of the net to give the Griffins the dramatic win.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot the Lions 16-7. Junior Taylor Pulvirenti recorded her first Griffin win in the net for Fontbonne.
On Saturday, Fontbonne dominated Berea to the tune of 5-0 to complete the successful road trip. Junior Ashlynn Reiter recorded a hat-trick for the Griffins while Hobbs scored again and junior Kaitlin Becherer scored her first goal as a Griffin. Thorpe added two assists and sophomore Natalie Sipole earned her first assist of the season. Pulvirenti tallied her first Griffin shutout of the season.
Fontbonne will return to action Saturday when they host Nebraska Wesleyan at 3 pm. It will be the Griffins 2014 home opener.
