Griffins win as Hobbs scores 4th game-winning goal
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne hosted NAIA University of Saint Mary (KS) (USM)Sunday. Both teams played a doubleheader this weekend and ironically both teams ended their Saturday games in a tie.
Fontbonne dominated offensively out the gate, making Spire goalkeeper Jessica Wolff work in cage, saving all three shots that the Griffins posted in the first four minutes of play. Fontbonne ended the first half with an 11-1 shot advantage.
Junior Paige Pfankuch put the Griffins on the board first during the 23rd minute. Pfankuch took a free kick near the 25 yard line on the far side of the field. Her shot lofted over Wolff into the left side of the goal, for her first goal of the season.
During the 27th minute, Pulvirenti made a diving stop, barely securing the ball as she was able to cut off a USM offensive threat near the right middle of the box, keeping the Griffins in the lead.
Fontbonne decided to try a new lineup to start the second half and USM came out strong, possessing the ball much more. The Spires tied the game in the 60th minute as Courtney Callahan made a swift and clear pass to Kara Stephens. Just a minute and a half later, Kelly Bobbs narrowly missed a top left corner header from a Griffin corner kick.
Throughout the game, Wolff struggled clearing the ball. Finally an error proved effective for the Griffins as she cleared a ball directly to Hobbs in the center of the field. Hobbs brought the ball down and immediately sent it into the goal for her fourth game-winning goal of the year and fifth goal of the season.
The Griffins ended with a 15-8 shot advantage. Pulvirenti saved three while Wolff saved six.
Fontbonne hosts Millikin University on Wednesday at 6pm.
