Only one goal needed in Griffin win over Millikin
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbone women's soccer is now 7-1-1 after a 1-0 win Wednesday night against Millikin University. The Griffins haven't lost in their last four games.
What started out as Millikin maintaining possession the first few minutes turned in favor of the Griffins as the Big Blue seemed to continue with passes too hard and too wide. Fontbonne's defense was in control as usual, eliminating several one on one Millikin threats.
Kelly Hobbs headed Paige Pfankuch's corner kick into the goal during the 25 minute mark for her sixth goal of the season. Five of Hobbs' goals have been game-winners and tonight's goal marked her third consecutive game-winner. Pfankuch now has three assists.
During the second half, a Fontbonne foul proved nerve-wracking for fans as the initial Millikin shot was blocked, only for the rebound to be crossed right in front of the goal from the baseline. Luckily the ball slipped through and resulted in a Griffin goal kick.
The final Millikin threat occurred with just two and a half minutes left in the game. Jenna Eaker chased a ball into the right side of the box, with a Griffin defender on her heels and Fontbonne goalkeeper Tayler Pulvirenti sprinting to the ball as well. Pulvirenti and Eaker both slid, with Eaker trying to chip the ball past Pulvirenti. Pulvirenti stuck up her hand, knocking the ball away from the goal and securing the Griffin lead.
Fontbonne barely outshot Millikin 8-7 and both teams recorded three saves. The Griffins again edged Millikin, this time in corner kicks 5-4.
Fontbonne hosts MacMurray College on Saturday for their SLIAC opener at 6pm.
