Griffins open SLIAC with victory and third consecutive win
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's soccer improves their record to 8-1-1 after a St. Louis Intercollegiate opening match win over MacMurray College. The Griffins scored eight goals in the shutout en route to their third consecutive win. Fontbonne hasn't lost in their last five games.
Kelly Hobbs continues to make her mark on game-winning goals. As of Thursday, Hobbs was ranked second among NCAA Division III women's soccer players for her five game-winning goals. She sent a small swift pass to Kayla Thorpe who dribbled up the left side of the box with a MacMurray defender on her side. Thorpe got the left-footed shot off, but went down with an injury and had to leave the game. Thorpe has four goals on the season.
Fontbonne's second goal came as Kaitlin Becherer stole the ball from MacMurray and sent it to Kelly Hobbs in the center of the field who passed it directly upfield for Ashlynn Reiter's fourth goal of the season. Hobbs has a total of three assists.
3rd goal: Lyndsey Godier sent another Griffin long cross from the left side of the field into the box for Savannah Davis' first goal of the season.
4th goal: Linsey Klein sent a lofted pass from the 40 yard line to Ashlynn Reiter who received the ball 20 yards out, and scored across to the right side of the goal.
5th goal: Ashlynn Reiter was in the far left corner of the field, opposite the fans when she sent a cross that went through several MacMurray defenders and a diving goalkeeper to find Davis for her second goal of the game.
6th goal: Godier sends a long ball 40 yards up the middle as Heather Wiegmann chased down the ball and scored from 25 yards out.
7th goal: Klein stopped the ball in the center of the field and back passed to Natalie Sipole. Sipole sent a leading pass up the left side to Alex Reiter. Reiter launched a shot 30 yards with her left foot over the goalkeeper's outstretched hands for her first goal of the season.
8th goal: Ashlynn Reiter sent a cross along the ground on the right baseline. MacMurray's goalkeeper dove to intercept and Klein was there for the rebound and the final Griffin goal of the game.
Fontbonne hosts #1 Washington University Wednesday, October 1st for their annual game to support breast cancer awareness. The Griffins ask all fans to wear pink in honor of those lost to this terrible disease and for cancer survivors. Gametime is slated for 7:30pm.
