Griffins win final non-conference match of 2014
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's soccer takes their number of season wins to ten in their last non-conference game of the seaosn, defeating Oakland City University 2-0.
The Lady Oaks threatened early but junior goalkeeper Tayler Pulvirenti came through as she saved Lauren Rapp's shot as the sixth minute began. Rapp was wide open on the far right side as Pulvirenti slid for the save.
Fontbonne had several would-be shots that were broken up by Oakland City goalkeeper Eleni Moreland before the Griffins found the back of the net near the 27th minute. Sophomore Natalie Sipole stole the ball in the midfield and sent a wide open pass up the middle to Ashlynn Reiter. Reiter tried to shoot around Moreland who blocked the shot. Junior Lynsey Godier was there on the backside for the rebound and the game-winner into the open net.
Pulvirenti and the Griffin defense ended a Lady Oak threat in the 50th minute to preserve their 1-0 lead early in the second half.
Second half play was much rougher as both teams were pushing and shoving. In total, the Griffins committed 14 fouls and the Lady Oaks recorded 8 fould. Finally a corner proved effective as Pfankuch shot the ball and Kelly Hobbs' header floated back towards Pfankuch. Pfankuch shot the ball hard as it barely deflected off Moreland's outstretched hand into the goal.
Lady Oaks Tori Flowers proved dangerous late in the game with two headers in close proximity to the goal.
The 2-0 shutout was Fontbonne's eighth on the season and Pulvirenti's seventh. Both Godier and Pfankuch scored their second goals of the season.
The Griffins host Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday for a 1pm matchup.
