St. Louis, Mo. - The Fontbonne University women's soccer team remains perfect in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) defeating Principia College 2-1 last night. The Griffins improved to 12-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the SLIAC.
On a cold, wet and windy evening, Fontbonne seized control of the match early. The Griffins had the better of the play early creating several good chances but failing to captialize. Fontbonne finally got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when sophomore Kelly Hobbs headed home a corner kick from junior Paige Pfankuch. The goal was Hobbs' eighth of the season. Fontbonne maintained that 1-0 lead into halftime despite outshooting the Panthers 8-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Panthers picked up their play and got themselves back into the game. The Panthers were rewarded for the hard work by scoring on a corner kick in the 53rd minute. As the game looked destined for overtime, Fontbonne found the game-winner in the 87th minute on a goal by sophomore Savannah Davis. Pfankuch and Hobbs assisted on the game-winner.
The victory was the fourth in a row for the Griffins and the program's first over the Panthers since 2004. The current 12 wins is the second most in a single season at Fontbonne.
Fontbonne will look to continue its solid play as they travel to Eureka, Illinois on Saturday for a 1pm game against Eureka College.
