St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's soccer tied Westminster College 1-1 on senior night last night, taking the Griffins' St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 7-0-1 and overall record to 15-2-2. Before the game, Fontbonne honored outgoing seniors Emily Davenport, Kayla Thorpe, Allison Weber and Meggin Werner.
Westminster got on the board first when a rare defensive misstep, allowing a goal right in front of the net. The ball hit the crossbar and landed inside the goal on the bounce.
Fontbonne's Lyndsey Godier scored in the 58th minute from the left post. Thorpe's soft touch to the right baseline allowed Kaitlin Becherer to lob an assist directly to Godier on the far post for the touch in. Westminster's goalkeeper couldn't make the post-to-post treck for the save.
With only one shot each during the first half, both teams stepped up their offensive charges late in the game. Fontbonne out-shot Westminster 13-5 in the game. The Griffins couldn't capitalize on multiple corner kick opportunities late in the game, ending in their first conference tie.
Fontbonne travels to Webster University on Saturday for a 1pm game. The Griffins must defeat the Gorloks to win the SLIAC regular season Championship.
