St. Louis, Mo. - After scoring in the 16th minute, the Griffins fell victim to Illinois College's Ashley Sholmire, twice, falling to the Lady Blues 2-1.
Fontbonne came out in their home-opener in style, scoring the first goal of the contest. Freshman Daniele Caruso sent the ball towards the center of the field where fellow freshman Hannah Andrzejewski headed it closer to the top of the box. Senior Kaitlin Becherer swooped in from the right side, making the Griffins' only connection of the game.
Sholmire, who was dangerous throughout the first half, finally came through for the Lady Blues, scoring the game-winner in the 80th minute.
Fontbonne played possession soccer and held an overall 12-5 shot advantage despite the loss. The Griffins even had the upper hand in corner kicks (6-1).
The Griffins host Rhodes College Saturday at 1pm, followed by Wartburg College Sunday at 2pm.
