St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne fans didn't envy goalkeeper Tayler Pulvirenti today who saw 15 shots in the first half alone, mostly from point blank range. Head Coach Brian Hoener pulled his starting squad just 12 minutes into the game after Wartburg College sophomore Morgan Neuendorf scored a true hat-trick in 11:38. The Knights scored twice more before both teams took a break.
Wartburg opened second-half play with their sixth goal of the game in the 48th minute. Overall second-half play for Fontbonne improved as the Griffins put more pressure on Wartburg's defensive with several good looks to goal. Fontbonne found a couple holes with 34 minutes left as Ellen Wever found Ashlynn Reiter wide open. Reiter charged downfield with pressure on her back, getting a clear shot 15 yards out. She had another chance that was also saved a minute later. Wartburg scored their final goal in a scrum in the 65th minute.
Pulvirenti made eight saves on the day as the Griffins suffered their second shutout in a row and third of the season. Alex Reiter recorded two defensive saves on the day as well. Wartburg outshot Fontbonne 22-3.
Fontbonne travels to Oakland City Wednesday and will be back at home Sunday, Sept. 20th for a noon contest against Hendrix College.
