St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's soccer held No. 6-ranked Washington University to just one goal in tonight's Wydown Showdown. The Griffins lost the rivalry contest 1-0 as the frustrated Bears recorded three yellow cards on the night. Prior to tonight, WashU had been handed just two yellows all season. The Griffins are now 7-9 on the season as WashU advances to 13-2.
Griffin chances were often muffled by WashU's height as the Bears headed most of Fontbonne's threats out of harm's way. The Bears scored the game-winner at the end of the 25th minute on a shot to the upper left 90.
Second-half play was relatively even but the Bears threatened in the 77th minute on a cross to the left post that was headed away by Griffin freshman Daniele Caruso. Fontbonne returned the threat in the 85th minute when Natalie Sipole served a ball deep near the goal. Ashlynn Reiter was fighting her way to the ball with a Bear defender on her back, forcing the shot wide left. Fontbonne had another chance with three minutes left that was wide as well as the Griffins never gave up.
The Bears held a 12-5 shot advantage with only two on-goal chances all game. Each team was cognizant of corner kicks as WashU had the only opportunity in the first half.
Fontbonne hosts Eureka College this Saturday, October 24th at 3pm for their final home game of 2015. At halftime, the Griffins will recognize nine outgoing players.
