Griffins honor nine seniors with ten goals on senior day
St. Louis, Mo. - With nine seniors on the squad, the Griffins ended their final 2015 home game with a 10-0 win over Eureka College Saturday. Fontbonne honored the outgoing student-athletes at halftime when the Griffins were already ahead 4-0. Fontbonne's win pushed the team over .500 in conference play (4-3) and closer to .500 overall (8-9). Eureka slipped to 4-12-1 overall and 1-6 in the SLIAC.
Fourth-year Ashlynn Reiter scored Fontbonne's first two goals with her first coming off an assist from junior Natalie Sipole. Sipole's shot in the 19th minute was saved by Eureka's goalkeeper and Reiter was there to finish her second goal of the game. Senior Kelly Hobbs booted a goal off a Eureka bobble, her second of the season. About two minutes later Fontbonne senior Lyndsey Godier scored her first goal of the contest and final Griffin goal of the first half on a tap-in sent from the baseline by fellow senior Kaitlin Becherer.
Godier connected with the net again this time from Reiter in the 48th minute to open second-half play. Godier and Becherer switched roles when Godier sent Becherer a through ball up the middle to the top of the box in the 52nd minute. After taking the seniors out of the game, 20 minutes went by until Fontbonne found the back of the net again, this time by Hannah Edmundson who picked up the ball from the Eureka defense for her first collegiate goal. Edmundson fired the ball in from near the top of the box. Fellow freshman Taylor Gianopulos found the ball off Savannah Davis' corner kick near the left post and sent it to the opposite post for her first collegiate goal as well. About a minute later Hannah Andrzejewski netted her third goal of the season from Rebecca Rosebrough. Rosebrough then received a pass from Andrzejewski to net her first collegiate goal to round out Fontbonne's scoring efforts in the 88th minute.
Fontbonne outshot Eureka 50-1. Kalionna Matthews saved 17 in her team's loss. Fontbonne fans gave Matthews plenty of encouragement sa the goalie made multiple tough saves on some really hard shots by the Griffins. Fontbonne held a 15-0 corner-kick advantage in the contest.
Fontbonne senior Tayler Pulvirenti recorded her 14th career shutout in the win, making her Fontbonne's all-time career shutout leader. Senior Paige Pfankuch made her 75th career start while Godier earned her 74th career start. The two are No. 1 and No. 2 all-time in Fontbonne career starts. Other seniors recognized at halftime included Alex Adelman, Taylor McGowen and Alex Reiter.
The Griffins travel to Principia Thursday, October 29th for an 8pm SLIAC matchup.
