ELMHURST, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team hit the pitch for the first time this season, however, despite its efforts the Griffins fell 3-1 against Elmhurst College.
The Griffins (0-1), totaled nine shots on the night with seven landing on net. Maddie Redohl led the Griffins with her first goal on the year, while Anna Whitaker and Meredith Wendt each peppered Blue Jays goalie Sophia Tuliglowski for a combined five shots. In net, Makayla Hussong got the nod in net and came up with six saves.
The Blue Jays (1-0), meanwhile, outshot Fontbonne 10-9 while getting goals from Sidney O'Keeffe, Emma Krick and Kim Stanczak. In goal, Tuliglowski picked up the win after making seven saves.
In the first half, at the 15:03 mark, a free kick was awarded to EC and from 45 yards out the ball eventually found O'Keeffe, who put it away past Hussong to give them the early 1-0 lead.
Later, Daniele Caruso (27:24) and Whitaker (29:25) put shots on net for the Griffins but it was Tuliglowski coming up with the saves and keeping the EU ahead at the break, 1-0.
Things picked up in the second half in favor of Elmhurst with Krick scoring at the 51:08 mark to push the lead out to 2-0. Then, a little over eight minutes later, Stanczak beat Hussong on a head ball off a corner kick to give them a 3-0 advantage.
Fontbonne wouldn't give in though as after tallying two more shots they finally beat Tuliglowski. At the 75:40 mark, Jacey Pate's corner kick found the head of Redohl and she found twine to make it a 3-1 game. That'd be as close as they'd get though with Elmhurst going on for the two goal win.
The team will be right back at it on Sunday afternoon when they'll take on Dominican. Kick-off begins at 2:45 p.m.
