ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team played well against No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer, however, it was the Sagehens coming away with the 3-0 win.
The Griffins (0-4), totaled six shots and were led by Ellen Weaver's two. Linsey Klein, Meredith Wendt, Jacey Pate and Karlie Peth contributed one a piece. In goal, Mary Beers got the nod and came up with a season-high nine saves.
Pomona-Pitzer (2-2), opened up the field throughout the first half, allowing them to finish with 22 shots. Lily Gane, Chloe Hamer and Bria VarnBuhler all scored for the Sagehens, while Chloe Hamer led the way with five shots.
In the first half, Natsha Thornton-Clark received the ball at midfield in the 27th minute. She fed it over to the right side for Gane who blasted her shot into the far left corner to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins had a couple chances of its own with some great passes to split the defense, however, the Sagehens defense was able to kick the ball away from danger. Despite having a shot advantage of 8-2 in the first half, Pomona-Pitzer was only up 1-0 which can be attributed to the Griffins multiple defensive stops.
Play swayed towards Fontbonne in the second half with them amping up the pressure offensively. In the 56th minute, the Griffins were awarded a corner kick and the ball got loose in the box, but Weaver's shot towards goal was blocked.
The back-and-forth played continued with each team playing well both offensively and defensively. Then, at the 75:09 mark, VarnBuhler played a through ball for Hamer, she tipped the ball past the Griffins defense and buried her shot into the back of the net making it a 2-0 game. The Sagehens tacked on another goal with VarnBuhler scoring off a corner-kick to make it a final, 3-0.
FBU will return to action at home on Thursday, September 14th, when they'll take on Illinois College. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
