Griffins Fall Short In Comeback Attempt Against Rhodes
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women’s soccer team dominated play throughout the second half, however, the comeback was not to be with Rhodes going on for the 2-1 win.

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team dominated play throughout the second half, however, the comeback was not to be with Rhodes going on for the 2-1 win.
FBU (1-5), totaled 15 shots on the day with Ellen Weaver leading in that department with three. Kierstyn Weaver, meanwhile, netted her third goal on the year, while Mary Beers made four saves in net.
The Lynx (3-3-1), also finished with 15 shots and they were paced by Sydnie Schindler's one goal performance on five shots. Rachel Giampapa lone shot turned out to be the game winner for Rhodes. In goal, Anna Maldonado was stout making six saves.
Through the early minutes of the first half it was Fontbonne controlling the pace of the game. Things changed as the clock wore on and Rhodes eventually took advantage.
In the 31st minute, Schindler received a pass from just outside the 18 and lifted over the leaping Beers in net to make it 1-0. The two teams' battled it out the rest of the way, but it was the Lynx owning a one goal lead.
After owning a shot advantage of 9-4 in the first half, Rhodes picked up right where it left off in the second.
Rhodes' Katelyn Curtis passed the ball down the right side for Aly Hoyt. She went on to cross it right onto the foot of Giampapa, who scored to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead.
From then on it was Fontbonne picking up the pressure and putting the Lynx defense on its heels throughout. After owning a shot advantage of 5-3 after the goal, the Griffins were awarded for its hard fought effort.
Linsey Klein dribbled just outside the box and crossed it over for Weaver, and with a defender right on her back, Weaver was able to tip it past Maldonado to make it a one goal deficit.
Three minutes later, they had a chance to tie it off a corner kick, but Ellen Weaver's shot was stopped by Maldonado. FBU continued its mounting pressure on Rhodes as the majority of the half was spent on their side of the field.
Then, the Griffins had another chance off the foot of Karlie Peth. Her shot though went off the post and out of play, keeping Rhodes ahead. The team tried to make one final push, however, they ran out of time and were dealt a tough 2-1 loss.
They'll be back at it on Wednesday when the team travels right down the street to take on the No. 1-ranked Washington University Bears. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
