Griffins Unable To Slow Down No. 1 WashU's Offense
ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- The Fontbonne University women’s soccer team went toe-to-toe with No. 1-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and despite its efforts the Griffins fell, 5-0.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with No. 1-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and despite its efforts the Griffins fell, 5-0.
FBU (1-6), concluded with six shots and they were led by Karlie Peth's four, while Leann Smith added the other two. In goal, Makayla Hussong did what she could in net after making five saves.
The Bears (7-0), got its five goals on 21 shots and they got its offense from Ellie DeConinck as she finished with two goals on three shots. Darcy Cunningham, Elise Brown and Taylor Cohen each found the back of the net once. In net, Katy Hutson and Emma Greenfield combined to make two saves.
It didn't take long for the Bears to get on the board. Right near the 3rd minute, Taylor Cohen passed it off to Cunningham and she blasted her shot into the far corner of the net, making it a 1-0 game.
Less than eight minutes later, the Bears tacked on another one on Cohen's one-timer into the upper corner, extending the advantage out to 2-0.
Fontbonne had a strong scoring chance in the 12th minute as Peth got around a defender and blasted her shot from outside the 18-yard box, however, Hutson made a diving save to keep it 2-0. FBU played well to close out the half and they were still within striking distance heading into halftime.
Coming out in the second half, the Griffins had hopes of coming out fast and getting on the board early. However, it was the Bears scoring its third goal of the game just 44.0 seconds in on DeConinck's first of the night, giving them a 3-0 lead. DeConinck wasn't done there with her scoring from 30 yards out at the 50:30 mark.
The Bears went on to add another in the 76th minute off the head of Brown, giving the home team a 5-0 win.
Fontbonne will be back at it this weekend at home in another tough non-conference game as they'll face Mt. St. Joseph. Kick-off begins at 1 p.m.
