ST. LOUIS, Mo.— It was a dominating performance by the Fontbonne University women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon as the Griffins defeated Harris-Stowe State, 3-1.
Fontbonne (3-7), totaled a season-high 46 shots in the victory. Leading the way offensively was Jacey Pate with her two goals on seven shots.
Meredith Wendt also had herself a game with one goal and one assist on 11 shots. In net, Mary Beers got the win after making five saves.
Harris-Stowe (2-7), was held to eight shots while Johanna Wallstab netted the Hornets lone goal on her three shots. In goal, Jenna Vitale kept her team in it throughout the match after making 17 saves.
In the first half, after peppering Vitale early the Griffins broke through in the 22nd minute. Karlie Peth raced down the left side of the field, crossed it over for Pate who settled the ball down and kicked it in to give them a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, Emily Cardwell passed the ball into the box for the awaiting Wendt and she blasted her shot into the far post, extending the advantage out to 2-0 at the break. FBU kept the ball on the Hornets half of the field throughout the half with them having a shot advantage of 21-3.
In the second frame, a corner kick was awarded to FBU in the 51st minute. Caruso played the ball to Wendt near the end line and she one touched it over to Pate at the top of the box, and she beat Vitale on the far side to push the lead out to 3-0.
FBU continued its offensive push but Vitale was stout in net. Then, Harris-Stowe got on the board at 65:21. The team got a free kick and Karla Garcia passed it over to Wallstab on the left side.
She then dribbled on the inside near the box and sent a line shot over the leaping Beers, cutting the deficit down to 3-1. However, that'd be as close as they'd get with the Griffins maintaining that lead the rest of the way and went on for the two goal win.
FBU will be back at it this Saturday at home in its first conference game against Eureka. Kick-off at 3 p.m.
