ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team continued its winning ways on Saturday with a 12-0 victory over Eureka in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference (SLIAC) opener.
The Griffins (4-7; 1-0 SLIAC), outshot the short-handed Red Devils 65-0 in the win. Meredith Wendt, Emily Cardwell, Tori Harris and Kayla Collie each scored twice, while Leann Smith, Karlie Peth, Linsey Klein and Taylor Gianopulos tallied one each. In goal, Taylor Skaggs picked up her first win on the season.
Eureka (0-6; 0-1 SLIAC), didn't record a shot but Sarah Domkowski did what she could in net after making 26 saves.
It didn't take long for FBU to get on the board. At the 4:17 mark, Wendt passed the ball through for the cutting Cardwell and she kicked in her second of the season to make it 1-0. Four minutes later, a corner kick was awarded to FBU.
Daniele Caruso placed the ball perfectly onto the head of Smith who found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Less than a minute went by, Cardwell received a pass from Smith down the line. She raced over, crossed it over to the awaiting Wendt and she headed it in on the near post to give them a 3-0 lead.
Then, Cardwell netted her second of the game in the 15th minute after she dribbled around the Red Devils defense and scored. They weren't done there as in the 16th minute, Peth had a shot for goal but her attempt went off the post. However, Wendt was there to clean it up to make it 5-0.
Peth would score one minute later. Maddie Tague had a shot on goal that was saved by Domkowski, however, the ball got away from her and Peth scored to give them a commanding 6-0 advantage.
The team went on to tack three more goals on from Collie, Harris and Klein right before the half to give them a 9-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, it was more of the same with Fontbonne scoring three more times from Harris (55th), Collie (78th) and Gianopulos (89th) to make it a 12-0 final.
FBU will be back at it on Tuesday night as they'll take on rival Webster at Centene Stadium. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
