Three Second Half Goals Propel Griffins Past Greenville
GREENVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women’s soccer team scored three second half goals on Thursday evening which propelled them to a 4-1 victory over Greenville.
GREENVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team scored three second half goals on Thursday evening which propelled them to a 4-1 victory over Greenville.
The Griffins (6-8; 3-1 SLIAC), outshot the Panthers 12-3 in the win. Karlie Peth, Meredith Wendt, Kierstyn Weaver and Jacey Pate all scored, while Makayla Hussong got the win after making one save.
The Panthers (9-5; 3-1 SLIAC), got its lone goal from Dani Pearce. In net, Marjory Coates made four saves on eight shots on goal.
It didn't take long for Fontbonne to get on the board. In the sixth minute, Kierstyn Weaver found Peth and she was able to score her eighth on the year to make it a 1-0 game. Just over two minutes later, however, Pearce scored on the Panthers first shot of the game, her ninth on the season, to even it up at 1-1 less than nine minutes in.
It was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way with the Griffins owning a 3-1 shot advantage. At the end of 45:00 minutes though it was still knotted up 1-1.
In the second frame, at the 52:31 mark, Wendt netted her team-high 10th on the season, off an assist from Pate, to give them a 2-1 lead. Two minutes and 11 seconds later, Weaver got in on the action off Wendt's assist to push teams advantage out to 3-1.
The scoring frenzy continued as Pate capped it off with the team's third goal in four minutes and her fifth on the season, giving them a commanding 4-1 lead.
FBU controlled the pace of the game the rest of the way as they cruised to three goal victory.
With the win Fontbonne has now five out of its last six and they'll look to make it six out of seven against Blackburn at home on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
