ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team will enter the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) as the No. 2 seed and they'll host No. 3-seeded Greenville on Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Griffins (10-9; 7-2 SLIAC), closed out the year winners six out of its last seven games which propelled them up the standings to the No. 2 spot.
"I think we've done a great job maintaining our focus throughout the season," said head coach Brian Hoener. "We've had plenty of ups-and-downs but our goal has always been to get into the postseason and that's exactly where we're at."
After a tough non-conference schedule, FBU dominated its conference foes by outscoring them 46-5.
Individually, Meredith Went leads the offense with her career-high 16 goals and eight assists for 40 points. She's currently scored at least one goal in the last six games.
Jacey Pate and freshman Karlie Peth are both tied with eight goals, while Emily Cardwell has stepped up to finish the regular season with six goals of her own. Linsey Klein and Kierstyn Weaver each have provided the necessary spark when needed with five goals each.
"I thought our offense could be dangers going forward," added Hoener. "Between Wendt, Peth, Pate and both Weaver's we have some players that can be dangerous throughout 90 minutes and I think they've shown that."
In net, the trio of Makayla Hussong, Taylor Skaggs and Mary Beers have combined for a save percentage of .733 and a goals against average of 1.50. Beers, a freshman, leads the team in goals against (1.57) and save percentage (.764), while Hussong's played just under 800:00 minutes (799:47) thus far.
The last time these two teams played was back on October 12th and Fontbonne came away with the 4-1 win over Greenville. The Griffins outshot the Panthers 12-3 while getting goals from Peth, Wendt, Kierstyn Weaver and Pate.
Since then, Greenville (13-6; 7-2 SLIAC), won four out of its last five with its only blemish coming against No. 1-seeded Webster, 4-0.
Individually, Jade Taylor will be a player to keep an eye-out-for with her team-high 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points. Another freshman, Kate Arthur, closed out the year with a four goal performance against Blackburn to push her season total out to 14, to go along with her 12 assists.
Junior Danie Pearce has netted 12 goals and contributed nine assists, while Breanna Thomas scored eight goals and leads the Panthers with 16 assists.
In net, Marjory Coates leads them with her 13 starts, 47 saves, .701 save percentage and 1.53 goals against average.
"Greenville is a very well-coached team," Hoener stated. "That 4-1 score line is misleading, that game was much closer than that. We're also a little banged up right now so we know Thursday night is going to be a battle. A handful of plays will determine the result, whichever team makes those plays will be playing on Saturday."
