Kovarik Scores First On The Season In Defeat Against Pioneers

PORTLAND, Ore.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team closed out its trip to Oregon with a tough 4-1 loss against Lewis & Clark on Sunday.
The Griffins (0-2), concluded with four shots on the afternoon. Molly Kovarik led with three shots and scored her first goal with the team. In net, Makayla Hussong came away with five saves.
The Pioneers (1-0-1), got a two-goal performance out of Ella Viesturs. Anna Saucedo and Mali Peterson-Wood added the other goals for LC. In goal, Megan Sawyer got the victory after making one save in 74:10 minutes of action.
It was a scoreless game in the first half up until the 24:20 mark when Saucedo scored an unassisted goal. Then, at 36:51, PetersonWood passed the ball up the right side of the field for Viesturs. She was able to get behind the Griffins defense and score making it a 2-0 game at the break.
In the second frame, in the 53rd minute, the Pioneers attempted a clearance near midfield, though the ball went right to Rebecca Bass. She one-timed it up ahead for Kovarik on the break. The sophomore dribbled past the goalie on the right side and scored her first of the year.
However, 14:00 minutes later, the Pioneers got the two-goal lead back as Viesturs scored once more off a cross from Anna Saucedo. LC tacked on another goal off a penalty-kick in the 69th minute making it a 4-1 final.
The Griffins will now begin its seven-game homestand starting this week. First-up is St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Wednesday night. Kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
