ST. LOUIS, Mo.—After playing 110:00 minutes the previous night, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team took on another tough opponent in Claremont-M-S. Despite the efforts, the Griffins fell 1-0 on a late second-half goal by the Athenas.
Fontbonne (1-3-1), totaled two shots in the game as Molly Kovarik and Daniele Caruso had one each. In net, Mary Beers posted eight saves, one off her season-high.
CMS (3-1), concluded with 27 shots and got its lone goal off the foot of Sara Catherine Ueland. Claire Hamson got the win in net.
In the first half, the Athenas outshot the Griffins 11-1, but Beers came up big with a couple of saves. Fontbonne did have a scoring chance on a free kick by Caruso, however, her line drive shot was right at Hamson.
In the second half, the Athenas continued its offensive pressure, but the Griffins back line, along with Beers, kept it a 0-0 game. Then, in the 81st minute, Catherine Ueland ripped a shot from 20-plus yards out and it went into the top left corner of the net, giving CMS a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins tried one final push during the last nine minutes, though CMS fended off the charge for the one-goal win.
Fontbonne returns to action next Saturday afternoon against Coe College. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
