Griffins Second-Half Offensive Surge Comes Up Short Against Coe

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Despite battling the heat, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team second-half surge came up short in a 2-0 defeat against Coe.
The Griffins (1-4-1), collected all eight of its shots in the second half and were led by Daniele Caruso's four. In goal, Makayla Hussong got the nod and came away with six saves.
Coe (3-2-1), meanwhile, totaled 11 shots and got its goals from Sydney Schroder and Ashlyn Moos. In net, Kacey Baker made two saves for the win.
In the first half, the Kohawks outshot the Griffins 4-0. After its offensive pressure throughout the outing, the team was able to grab a 1-0 lead on Schroder's goal just outside the 18-yard box in the 32nd minute.
In the second, the Griffins had a chance to score the equalizer three minutes in, though Kayla Collie's attempt was saved by Baker.
Then, in the 66th minute, Schroder passed the ball up for Moos. She got behind the Griffins defense on a through ball and scored on the near post, extending the advantage to 2-0.
Fontbonne continued its offensive push and had another great scoring opportunity in the 84th minute. Molly Kovarik had the ball outside the 18-yard box and she tried to bend the ball in with a left-footed shot. However, backup net-minder, Alex Montalbano, made a diving save with her right hand.
Maddie Tague and Caruso had a couple last chances for Fontbonne, but the Kohawks hung on for the two-goal win.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon at home against Cornell. Kick-off at 12 p.m.
