Kovarik Scores Twice In Griffins Win Against Cornell
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Fontbonne University women’s soccer team got back on the winning track Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Cornell.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Fontbonne University women's soccer team got back on the winning track Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Cornell.
The Griffins (2-4-1), outshot the Rams (1-5), 18-8 and got both of its goals from Molly Kovarik. In goal, Mary Beers picked up her second win after making five saves.
The Rams got three of its shots from Elizabeth Mombello. In net, Cornell used three goaltenders, but starter Elise Thomason-Larsen got the defeat as she made four saves in 38:54 minutes of action.
In the first 30 minutes, the Griffins offense was in control with a shot advantage of 7-2. Then, at 33:22, Daniele Caruso saw her shot go off the crossbar and it landed right at the feet of Kovarik, who scored to make it a 1-0 game.
In the second frame, the offense continued its push and it paid off. Rebecca Bass had the ball on the far left side of the field and she crossed it over for Kovarik. The sophomore got ahead of the Rams defense and scored her second of the game, seventh on the season, extending the lead out to 2-0 in the 56th minute.
Kovarik had the chance for her second hat-trick on the season in the 83rd minute, but her free-kick attempt went off the post. Still, the Griffins maintained control the rest of the way and went on for the two-goal win.
Fontbonne returns to action at home on Thursday when they'll host No. 6 WashU. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
