ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team closed out its non-conference slate and seven-game homestand with a 5-0 victory over St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
It was a dominant performance by the Griffins (3-5-1), as they owned a 33-3 shot advantage against the Pomeroys (1-8-1). Daniele Caruso had herself a game with one goal and three assists on a game-high 10 shots.
Rebecca Bass, Caroline Neal, and Molly Kovarik each netted a goal. Also, Taylor Skaggs scored her first collegiate goal with the Griffins. In net, Mary Beers improved to 3-2 on the season after making two saves.
In the first, after constant offensive pressure, the Griffins were able to break through. Caruso found Bass on the right side of the box and she scored past Corre Matherly to make it 1-0 at 15:25.
Thirteen minutes later, the Griffins struck again. Caruso initial shot was saved by Matherly on the break, though she buried the rebound for her first on the season.
In the second frame, just past the 56th minute, Bass crossed the ball over Matherly's head. It one-hopped to Neal and she tipped it under the leaping Pomeroy's goalie, extending it to 3-0.
Kovarik got in on the action in the 67th minute with a penalty-kick goal. Then, in the 81st minute, Caruso's shot went off the post, however, Skaggs was right there to score her first to give them the five-goal win.
Fontbonne now heads on the road this weekend for its first conference match against Eureka on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
