ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team scored six goals for the second straight outing and extended its winning streak out to nine after a 6-1 win over MacMurray.
Prior to the Kicking Cancer: Breast Cancer Awareness Game, the women's team honorary coach was Rebecca Eftink, mother of Fontbonne Director of Athletics Maria Buckel. Rebecca was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently waging her own battle against the disease.
The Griffins (11-5-1; 8-0 SLIAC), totaled 34 shots in the victory. Molly Kovarik scored goals 15 and 16 on the season. Kayla Collie, Maddie Tague, Hannah Andrzejewski, and Rebecca Bass added the others. In net, Mary Beers picked up her sixth win on the season.
MacMurray (4-11; 2-5 SLIAC), got its lone goal off the foot of Kaylee McClanahan. In goal, Kayla Enochs compiled 10 saves.
In the first, the Griffins got on the board in the 11th minute as Kovarik received a pass from Tague up field and she tipped it past Enochs and scored into the open net.
In the 27th minute, the Griffins struck again. Bass passed it off to Tague and she got to the far side of the box, crossed it over for Collie, who one-timed it into the back of the net, for her first on the season.
Less than 20.0 seconds later, though the Highlanders answered. McClanahan had the ball at the top of the box and she scored to the far post, cutting the deficit down to 2-1 and ending the Griffins shutout streak at nearly 480:00 minutes.
The Griffins answered right back three minutes and 35 seconds later. Tague got the ball in the box and she fended off a couple Highlander defenders to score her first on the year, making it a 3-1 game at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins dominated with a 13-0 shot advantage as Andrzejewski, Kovarik, and Bass all scored for the 6-1 win.
The Griffins will now pay a visit to Webster on Saturday afternoon. The winner of that game will win the SLIAC Regular Season Championship. Kick-off at 1 p.m.
