Women's Soccer Falls In Penalty Kicks Against Westminster In The SLIAC Semifinals

After 110:00 minutes of action, the game was all square at 1-1. In PK's, the Griffins jumped out ahead on Hannah Andrzejewski's goal.
The Blue Jays went on to make the next two to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth round. Daniele Caruso scored to make it 2-2, but Cara Wilfong scored in the fifth to give Westminster the 3-2 win.
Overall, the Griffins (11-6-2; 8-1 SLIAC) outshot Westminster 15-7. Darby Schaefering netted her second goal on the season. In net, Makayala Hussong made three saves.
The Blue Jays (10-4-3; 6-2-1 SLIAC), got its goal off the foot of Katherine Hammond in the 77th minute. In net, Sarah Cradick made quite a few key saves to conclude with six.
In the first, the Griffins provided the pressure early as the team saw Caruso and Rebecca Bass' shot attempts go wide left.
Then, in the 23rd minute, Schaefering got the ball near the top of the box and shot it at Cradick. It went off the net-minders hands and trickled behind her to give Fontbonne the 1-0 lead.
That score remained the same the rest of the first half with Fontbonne having a 5-1 shot advantage through 45:00 minutes of action.
In the second, the pace picked up for both teams. In the 66th minute, the Griffins had a great chance to extend its lead. Caroline Neal took a shot from the left side that was saved by Cradick. The ball got away from her and Kayla Collie raced in.
Collie tipped it past Cradick, but the Blue Jays goalie dove to stop the ball from crossing the line to keep it a one-goal game.
In the 77th minute, a foul was called on Fontbonne. Hammond took advantage as her shot from 20-yards out went into the top left corner of the net, tying the game up at 1-1.
The Griffins outshot Westminster 2-1 the final 13:00 minutes, though neither team scored the game-winner and it was off to OT.
Fontbonne had the lone shot in overtime with Neal's attempt getting saved by Cradick. In the second OT, the two defenses stood tall and with neither scoring a goal, it was time for penalty-kicks for the first time since 2016 in the SLIAC Semifinals for Fontbonne.
However, the Blue Jays won in penalty kicks to advance onto the SLIAC Championship against Greenville.
Fontbonne finishes the year 11-6-2 and 8-1 in conference play.
