ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team collected its seventh shutout on the season and in the process won the SLIAC Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2012. It's the first time in program history they are the outright champions.
How It Happened
It was a scoreless contest up until the 36th minute when Krystal Kohenskey had the ball in the corner and she found Molly Kovarik in the box. The senior was able to blast her shot past the Gorloks goalie, Heather Jones, for her eighth goal on the season.
In the second half, the duo struck together once more with Kohenskey's shot going off the cross bar and right to Kovarik who netted her ninth on the season. That was more than enough for the Griffins with its defense and Mary Beers in net as they went on for the shutout victory.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Molly Kovarik led with six shots and two goals. She's up to nine on the season giving her 35 in her career which places her fifth all-time with Robyn Messey (2009-12).
- With two more assists Kohenskey has 10 on the year placing her seventh all-time at Fontbonne for a single-season.
- The seventh shutout on the season for Beers is tied for third all-time with Tayler Pulvirenti (2016).
