Women's Soccer Collects Ninth Shutout On Year In Win Over Blackburn, Caitlyn Smith Nets Hat-Trick
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The No. 1 seed Fontbonne University women’s soccer team started off the SLIAC Quarterfinals in dominating fashion with a 9-0 victory over No. 8 Blackburn.

How It Happened
The Griffins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a Blackburn own goal. In the 13th minute, the team extended its lead out to 2-0 with Caitlyn Smith winning the battle for the ball at the top of the key for her fourth goal on the season.
The scoring frenzy continued in the 28th minute when Caroline Neal buried the loose ball into the net for her fourth goal on the year as well giving Fontbonne a 3-0 lead at the break. Fontbonne outshot the Beavers 36-0 in the first half.
In the second, the Griffins wasted no time getting the offense going with Haley Buscher scoring her first on the year beating Blackburn goalie Morgan Zobrist into the left corner of the net.
From there, the Griffins got goals from Molly Kovarik, Smith, Buscher, Neal, and Smith once more for the hat-trick securing the nine-goal win.
Fontbonne Leaders and Notes
- Smith netted her first hat-trick giving her six goals on the season. She led with 12 shots overall.
- Buscher's two-goal performance gives her a new career-high.
- Neal finished with two goals and an assist on seven shots.
- Kovarik's goal was her team-high 10th on the season.
- Krystal Kohenskey added two more assists giving her a team-high 13 on the year and it ties her for second all-time in a single-season at Fontbonne.
- This was Mary Beers eighth shutout on the season.
- The ninth team shutout for Fontbonne is tied for fourth in program history.
- The nine goal performance is a SLIAC Tournament single-game record.
- The 70 shots are a single-game record at Fontbonne.
