ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team earned its first victory on the season after shutting out Carthage, 2-0.
Game Breakdown
The Griffins controlled the pace and possession battle throughout the first half with the team leading 4-1 in shots through the first 20:00 minutes of play.
Then, in the 25th minute, the Griffins got on the board thanks to Molly Kovarik. The ball was lifted ahead for the senior forward and using her speed she was able to win a battle against two Firebirds defenders, get behind the defense, and beat Carthage's goalie into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Fontbonne owned a 3-1 shot advantage the rest of the way and headed into the break on top by one.
In the second half, the Firebirds came out with a sense of urgency but the Griffins were able to keep its one goal advantage intact.
In the 69th minute, the Griffins were able to put the game away. Krystal Kohenskey got the ball near midfield, she weaved her way between the Firebirds defense and passed a perfect through ball for a cutting Kovarik who one-timed it past Sara Lieffrig for her second of the game.
That two goal advantage proved to be more than enough with Fontbonne picking up its first win on the year.
