ST. LOUIS, Mo.— National Girls & Women in Sports Day starts today and over the next week we'll be highlighting the success over our women's sports teams and individuals over the past year. First up, we'd like to spotlight women's soccer player, Molly Kovarik.
It was quite the 2021 season for the Fontbonne University women's soccer team winning the SLIAC Regular Season Title last spring and being the SLIAC Tournament Champions in the fall of 2022. Individually, Molly Kovarik turned in a historic final season capping off an illustrious career with the Griffins.
Prior to heading into the fall 2021 season, the Festus, Mo., native, already had 36 goals to her name, ranked fifth all-time in goals, fourth in points with 81, was a three-time SLIAC First Team Selectee and became the first time in program history to win SLIAC Player of the Year from last spring.
Kovarik had a dominating spring season in 2021 totaling 10 goals in just 12 games and added two assists for 22 points.
Her success carried over into the fall where she posted three hat-tricks and tallied at least one goal in all but five of the 20 games.
She went on to make history on October 20th becoming the all-time leader in program history with her 49th career goal against Spalding. She surpassed Fontbonne Hall of Famer Kendra Schilli who had 48 goals and held onto that record since 2011.
Kovarik went on to have a career year totaling 23 goals and four assists for 50 points placing her second all-time for a single season. She was named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team for the fourth straight season. Also, won back-to-back SLIAC Player of the Year becoming just the sixth player in SLIAC history to win the award.
She ended her career ranking first all-time in goals (59), 10th in assists (13) and second in points (131).
