Volleyball Sweeps Harris-Stowe in Home Opener
St. Louis- Fontbonne women's volleyball was on par tonight as they increased their 2013 season record to 2-4. The Griffins had their fans cheering loud and proud as they swept the Harris-Stowe State College Hornets 25-7, 25-15 and 25-15.
The first set went by quickly as Fontbonne recorded 13 kills compared to the Hornets three. Hornet setter Tiarra McFarland would go down with an injury and not return the rest of the game.
The Griffins suddenly lost focus at the beginning of the second set. Harris-Stowe would see their biggest lead of the match at 7-1, and finally the Griffins found their rhythm, never turning back. Fontbonne would go on to win the set scoring 24 points to the Hornets' eight.
Miscommunication on the first point attempt by Fontbonne would give Harris-Stowe their first lead of the third set at 1-0. The Griffins would gain the lead with the score 7-6 and hold on for the win.
Overall Fontbonne out-killed Harris-Stowe 35-13. Both team-high 14 digs were from liberos Kyesha Lee (Hornets) and Rachel Barnes (Griffins). Four ball-handling errors hurt Harris-Stowe as Fontbonne served up six aces and only recorded one serve receive error. Griffin kills were split between team members, with ten players recording kills, noone recording more than six. Setters Mandy DeWitt and Lynsey Wehrenberg were both in rhythm tonight. DeWitt accumulated 16 assists and Wehrenberg was right behind her with 14.
Fontbonne opens up St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they travel to Blackburn this weekend for a Saturday matchup against Webster (noon) and Blackburn (2pm).
