Griffins Continue Red Devils' Winless Streak
St. Louis- Women's volleyball efforts were rewarded with a win over Eureka College in straight sets. Fontbonne is now 6-9 overall and 4-3 in SLIAC play. Eureka is winless on the season, sitting at 0-14 overall and 0-8 in SLIAC play.
First set jitters made for an interesting match as the Griffins and Red Devils were tied at seven. Fontbonne took a 5-2 run to lead 13-9 before Eureka added three more points for a close 13-12 Griffins lead. Fontbonne would go on a 12-5 scoring run to finish out the first set.
The Griffins controlled the entire second set, smashing the Red Devils 25-9. With Fontbonne leading 20-9 in the third set, it looked like the Griffins were going to run away once again. Eureka proved fans wrong, closing in with a 9-2 run for a Fontbonne lead of 22-18. Eureka would score only once more as Fontbonne ended the set 25-19.
Senior Taryn Ballmann led the Griffins once again with 13 kills while fellow senior Abbie Bergtholdt recorded 9 kills and a game-high .444 kill percentage.
Four Griffins recorded double digit digs in the victory: Maddie Stadler (12), Lynsey Wehrenberg (11), Krista Beyer (11) and Ballmann (10).
Emily Weaver and Bergtholdt were the only Griffins with solo blocks on the night.
Kelli Dunne was the Red Devil causing problems on the court for the Griffins. Dunne recorded team highs of 7 kills and 15 digs. Emily Campbell managed 11 assists on the night.
Fontbonne is at Greenville taking on MacMurray (11am) and Principia (1pm) tomorrow. The Griffins return home Tuesday, October 15th for a 7pm game against Westminster.
