Seniors end careers with win
St. Louis- Fontbonne University women's volleyball ended their 2013 season tonight with a three-set win over St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The Griffins took the sets 25-21, 25-17 and 25-21. Ending their season record 10-18 marks the most wins in the past five years for the Griffins.
The team played their hearts out for seniors Taryn Ballmann, Abbie Bergtholdt and Cassie Dougherty. All three on the same front line, made for a threatening attack with sophomore Mandy DeWitt and freshman Lynsey Wehrenberg to set them up.
Leading the Griffins statistically was freshman Maddie Stadler and Krista Beyer. Stadler led the team with 13 kills and 17 digs. Beyer also contributed in the back row with 17 digs.
The Griffins' first lead only came at the end of the first set when Fontbonne led 19-18. The Griffins would go on a 6-3 run to acheive the win. Second set woes for the Eutectics set in and Fontbonne held the lead the entire set, cruising to a 25-17 victory. Leading 8-7, the Griffins maintained a 6-0 run before STLCOP called a timeout. Three times Fontbonne was up by seven points before acheiving their largest win margin of the game with the final point (8).
STLCOP started the third set strong leading 5-2 before the Griffins found themselves in yet another strong 6-0 run, leading 8-5. STLCOP managed to tie the game at nine but wouldn't see the lead again. Fontbonne's largest lead of the third set was six points. Dougherty recorded her final game-winning kill to end her career.
