Griffins end season with thrilling third set; set new records
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's volleyball 2014 season came to a close tonight after the Griffins fell to Webster University 17-25, 11-25 and 22-25. Fontbonne ended the season 13-18 overall and 7-11 in conference. Fontbonne finished sixth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) after a preseason coaches' poll put them in eighth place at the end of the season.
Before the game, Fontbonne fans and players honored outgoing seniors Krista Beyer, Claire Domian and Lucy Paasch.
In the first set against Big Bend foe Webster, the score was neck and neck with the Gorloks leading 15-14 when Webster ended the set on a 10-3 run. The Gorloks led 13-9 and scored seven straight points to put the set out of reach for Fontbonne.
Fontbonne came back in the third set and tied the game 11-11. Webster went on an 8-1 run to lead 19-12 before the Griffins called a timeout. Down 22-14, Fontbonne was able to score seven points to Webster's one, pulling within two points (23-21). Webster would secure the three-set win on a kill.
Beyer and Kersten McDonough each totaled 11 digs for Fontbonne. McDonough was the only place to record a double-double as she put down 13 kills as well.
Megan Morrison recorded 18 digs on the night for Webster as libero. The Gorloks will enter the SLIAC tournament, looking for their third straight tournament title and 12th overall.
Fontbonne sophomore Maddie Stadler has broken the Fontbonne women's volleyball record for most service aces in a single season. Previously 46 was the high, which Stadler beat when she recorded four aces against Principia last week. She has set a new record of 49 service aces.
Fontbonne sophomore Kersten McDonough was close to reaching the record for most kills in a season. Before tonight, McDonough had 482 kills, needing 25 to tie the record. Tonight McDonough's 13 kills puts her second in Fontbonne history in kills in a season with 495.
