Women's Volleyball wins home-opener
St. Louis, Mo. - An evening of loud fans filled the Dunham Student Activity Center in the Griffins' first home match of the year. Fontbonne women's volleyball defeated the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics 25-14, 18-25, 25-17 and 25-20. The Griffins are now 2-5 in 2015.
In the first set, Fontbonne went on a 10-2 run for a 20-10 lead before going back and forth to finish the set. The Griffins struggled in the middle of the second set. After leading 9-8, Fontbonne found themselves down 17-9 before hitting double digits. Down 21-11, the Griffins secured five straight points to pull within five of STLCOP, until ultimately losing their only set of the night.
Fontbonne led for the entire third set and just about all of the fourth. The two teams were tied 10-10 when STLCOP took their only lead of set four, after which the Griffins quickly regained. Leading 15-14 Fontbonne six points to STLCOP's one for a 21-15 advantage and never looked back. The Griffins won on a nice kill to the center of the court by Kristina Eason.
Junior Kersten McDonough led the team with 22 kills and 15 digs. But the Griffins' stats were well rounded tonight as four recorded double-digit digs. Eason ended the night with 13 kills while Holly Richter hit .600 at the net with seven kills on 10 attacks. Setting tasks were split right down the middle as senior Mandy DeWitt and junior Lynsey Wehrenberg each tallied 26 assists. Libero Maddie Stadler led Fontbonne with 17 digs and three aces.
Fontbonne stays close to home this weekend taking on neutral parties at Washington University Friday and Saturday. The Griffins take on Buena Vista at 5pm Friday and Carthage at 7pm. Fontbonne will then go up against Elmhurst at 10am Saturday followed by Whitworth at noon. All games will have live stats and can found on our schedule page. The Griffins are at home Wednesday, Sept. 16th when they host Lincoln Christian at 6pm.
