Women's Volleyball wins first SLIAC contest
Mount Pleasant, Iowa - It was the Griffins' first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the year and Fontbonne pulled out the first SLIAC win of the season last night. Fontbonne took down Iowa Wesleyan University 3-1 and are now 3-9 for 2015.
Fontbonne prevailed on a close first set 25-19 before overtaking the Tigers 25-14 in the second round. The Griffins were shaky in the third set, trailing 8-20 at one point before finally falling 13-25. A back-and-forth fourth set resulted in the 25-20 set win. Freshman Megan McKenzie put down the final kill for the victory.
Junior Kersten McDonough ended with the game-high 19 kills while Bailey Benes tallied nine and Kristina Eason totaled eight. At defense for the Griffins, Maddie Stadler finished with 28 digs on the night. McDonough and Lynsey Wehrenberg each posted a double-double. McDonough added 10 digs alongside her offensive power while Wehrenberg totaled 18 assists and 14 digs. Senior setter Mandy Dewitt tallied 21 assists. Stadler aided the Griffins behind the back line with four aces. Fontbonne overpowered the Tigers defensively at the net with a 10-2 team block advantage.
The Griffins turn around and host Lincoln Christian University Wednesday at 6pm.
