Griffins fall late to Lincoln Christian
St. Louis, Mo. - After a 25-23 first-set victory over Lincoln Christian University (LCU), the Griffins dropped set two but took the high road in the third set for the 2-1 advantage. In the fourth set, the Griffins found themselves down 3-11 but battled back to tie the game 18-18. Down by one (20-21), LCU posted three straight points, eventually taking the set 25-21. The Griffins came out flat in the fifth and found themselves trailing 1-8. A Griffin injury had fans and players concerned and Fontbonne wasn't able to recover their earlier deficit. LCU closed out with a 15-5 fifth-set win.
Kersten McDonough and Lynsey Wehrenberg posted double-doubles for the second time in as many days. McDonough led the game with 20 kills and 11 digs. The junior outside hitter saw 48 serve receptions throughout the game. Wehrenberg totaled 18 assists and 10 digs. Senior Mandy DeWitt recorded 22 assists and three service aces in the contest while Maddie Stadler had 24 digs on the night with two aces (back-to-back). Mariana Rogers also tallied double-digit digs with 11 along with three aces. Megan McKenzie had a good night as the freshman recorded her season-high 10 kills against the Red Lions. McKenzie finished with a .357 hitting percentage.
Fontbonne travels to Jacksonville, Ill. this weekend as MacMurray hosts the SLIAC quint this season. The Griffins will take on Blackburn at 11am followed by MacMurray at 3pm.
