St. Louis, Mo. -After losing their first set against Iowa Wesleyan University 26-28, the Griffins rebounded for back-to-back 25-20 wins. The Tigers managed to find some momentum and won the fourth set 25-20 to force the second five-set matchup between these two teams this season. Fontbonne trailed 11-14 before junior Kersten McDonough laid down four kills to give Fontbonne the 15-14 edge. A Griffin blocking error tied the game but McDonough rebounded again for a kill and the lead. Each team gave up a point on service errors and Fontbonne finally took the match 18-16 on an Iowa Wesleyan attack error.
McDonough tallied a career-high 34 kills against the Tigers, hit .338 and recorded 22 digs. Megan McKenzie totaled 10 digs (.219) while libero Maddie Stadler rallied for 30 digs. Mariana Rogers recorded 23 digs and two service aces in the win while setters Lynsey Wehrenberg and Mandy DeWitt totaled 32 and 21 assists respectively. Fontbonne recorded 10 total blocks while Kristina Eason was part of half of those with two solo blocks and three block assists. Both of her solo blocks came off back row attacks.
The Griffins then failed to rally agains the hard-hitting Webster University Gorloks falling 12-25, 19-25 and 17-25. The Gorloks averaged .311 at the net, compared to Fontbonne's .047 in the second game of the day. McDonough totaled three blocks at the net while middle blocker Carissa Dodge recorded four, taking her total on the day to eight blocks.
After today, Fontbonne is 9-13 overall and 7-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Griffins host Spalding University on Monday, October 5th at 7pm.
