Women's Volleyball falls to top rival Greenville
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's volleyball fell to conference leader Greenville College tonight 18-25, 19-25 and 21-25. Greenville advances to 21-7 on the year and 16-1 in the SLIAC while Fontbonne falls to 12-18 overall and 10-7 in conference. The Griffins must win their final game and Spalding must lose to Webster in order for the Griffins to advance to the SLIAC Tournament, as Fontbonne hopes to break their five-year drought.
Greenville led 14-12 in the first set and broke open the playing field with six straight points to lead 20-13 before closing out the win. Fontbonne led 8-7 in the following set, which was their final lead of the set as Greenville secured five points in a row to lead 13-8 and never looked back. With the game tied 6-6 in the third set, Fontbonne put up two big swings on the outside by Kersten McDonough, only to have Greenville's libero Jamie Schollenbruch somehow dig them out, allowing the team to begin another five point stretch of unanswered points. The Griffins trailed 14-22 and tried to post a comeback as they scored six straight points in their biggest run of the night. Fontbonne only trailed 20-22, but Greenville managed to pull out the three-set victory.
Megan McKenzie was sly tonight on the right side, hitting .385 on six kills on 13 attempts. Kristina Eason poised a threat on the outside, tipping down the line for several kills. The freshman led the team with eight kills while junior Holly Richter was busy at the net with a solo block and three block assists. Maddie Stadler led Fontbonne with 17 digs in the backrow.
The Griffins host their final game of 2015 this Tuesday, November 3rd against Eureka at 6 p.m. Before the game, Fontbonne will recognize three outgoing players in Mandy DeWitt, Carissa Dodge and Maddie Stadler.
