St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne women's volleyball had a tough day this past weekend. Webster University hosted the Griffins, Greenville College and Westminster College, all of whom participated in last year's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
It was the first time Fontbonne played Webster and Greenville this season, with both opponents taking four-set wins.The Griffins scored 21 or above in each of the eight sets on the day.
Webster
Fontbonne first played Webster and after losing the first two sets, the Griffins overtook the Gorloks 25-17. The Griffins tried to force a fifth set as they led 19-16 in the fourth but Webster powered back to tie it 21-21 before scoring two points to lead 23-21. Both teams exchanged points until Webster won the match on a 25-23 fourth-set victory.
Greenville
Fontbonne jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Greenville with a 25-21 first-set win. It looked like the Griffins were going to take the second set as well leading 18-13, but the Panthers had other plans. After a timeout, Greenville went on a 9-2 run to lead 22-20 and went on to win 26-24.
In the third set, it looked like Greenville would run away with the win as they held an 18-7 lead but the Griffins scored seven straight points to pull within four. Ultimately Greenville won 25-21. In the final frame, Fontbonne held a 19-18 lead but Greenville closed our the match with a 25-22 fourth-set win.
Overall
On the day, Kersten McDonough led the team with 29 kills, recording 15 and 14 respectively against her opponents. Kristina Eason was second on the team with a total of 18 kills, including 12 against Webster. Libero Mariana Rogers tallied 22 digs against Webster and 19 against Greenville for a day's high of 41 digs. The Griffins totaled 15.5 blocks including two solo blocks and six block assists by senior Alli Brown.
Fontbonne is at Spalding University this Friday, September 30 before traveling to Franklin, Ind. to take on Franklin and Earlham Saturday.
