Griffins defeat hosts Spalding 3-2; go 2-1 on the weekend
Fontbonne University women's volleyball took down the Spalding University Golden Eagles in a much-needed St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Friday night. After winning the first two sets, Spalding answered to even the score 2-2. Winning 6-4 in the fifth set, Fontbonne scored four points in a row to lead 10-4 before closing out the win 15-9.
In the victory, Fontbonne averaged .248 in hitting while the Golden Eagles struggled with a .122 average. Leading the Griffins was senior Kersten McDonough with 18 kills on a .350 average. Sophomore Megan McKenzie led the team with accuracy hitting .438 with nine kills on 16 attempts from the right side.
The Griffins then traveled to Franklin, Ind. to take on Earlham University and Franklin College. Fontbonne, hot off their win at Spalding, defeated Earlham 3-1. McDonough hit 15 kills but sophomore Kristina Eason snagged 13 on 26 attempts for a .500 hitting average. Senior libero Mariana Rogers scooped up 21 digs in the win.
Fontbonne then fell to host Franklin 3-1 despite scoring 20 points or more in each set including a 26-24 first-set loss. Senior Alli Brown recorded six block assists in the loss while McDonough added another 19 kills in the game.
On the weekend, McDonough tallied 52 kills and hit .306 while McKenzie led the team with a .360 average. Senior Lynsey Wehrenberg recorded 78 assists as the Griffins went 2-1 over the two days. She added 46 digs a well while Rogers totaled 50. At the net, Brown totaled 14 block assists with senior Holly Richter added 12 as well. McKenzie recorded the lone sole block while freshman Emma Seiz notched 11 block assists.
Fontbonne will travel to Elsah Ill. Thursday, Oct. 6th for a critical conference matchup at Principia College.
