Volleyball suffers heartbreaking loss at Principia
Elsah, Ill. - Fontbonne University women's volleyball lost to Principia College last night in a heartbreaking five-set match. The Griffins fell 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 14-25, 9-25 and are now 6-10 overall and 2-7 in conference play. Principia is now 4-6 against conference opponents.
The loss pushes Fontbonne to ninth in the SLIAC standings, and with only nine conference games left, diminishes their hopes of a SLIAC Tournament berth. The Griffins would have to win all of their remaining conference games to reach 11 SLIAC wins, which sent them to the tournament last season.
Fontbonne hit a massive .344 in the second set but failed to reach double digit kills in sets four and five. Principia hit .379 in set four to force the fifth set.
Kersten McDonough led Fontbonne with 16 kills while Principia's Sophia Hathaway tallied the game's high of 21 kills.
Fontbonne is on the road this weekend with three games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament in Bloomington, Ill. The Griffins only return to campus for games on October 15th when they host a SLIAC quad match.
