ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Back in front of the home crowd for the first time since September 26th, the Fontbonne University women's volleyball team treated its fans to a straight set (25-7, 25-21, 26-24) win over Robert Morris-Springfield.
The Griffins (7-13; 5-8 SLIAC), totaled 33 kills a .200 hitting percentage in the outing, making it the second straight game and sixth time this year they've hit .200 or better.
Individually, Victoria Curtice led with seven kills, a .385 hitting percentage and four digs. Abby Grumich finished with six kills, a match-high .750 hitting percentage and dished out 14 assists, while Sarah Borgerding and Emma Seiz added five kills each. Defensively, Megan Schaller collected a team-high seven digs to go along with her nine assists.
Robert Morris-Springfield (0-14), ended the evening with 23 kills, 22 errors for a .011 hitting percentage. Hannah Williams led with her match-high double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs. Brooke Franklin chipped in 12 assists, while Franklin and Abby Gilmore tied Williams with 11 digs.
In the first set, Fontbonne opened up with a dominant 11-5 advantage on Grumich's kill. They closed out the set on a 14-2 run, cruising to the 25-7 victory.
In the second, FBU took the early lead again at 11-6 on Curtice's kill. They held that advantage up until the Eagles soared back to tie it at 17-all on Williams' service ace.
Fontbonne was able to gather themselves and go on a 5-0 run to take a 22-17 lead. That proved to be more than enough as they went on for the 25-21 win.
The third set was a battle from the start. Both squads met-up at 10-10 on Grumich's kill. RMU got the lead back, however, extending it out to 15-12 on Kathryn Wietzki's kill.
Back came the Griffins with another 5-0 run to take a 17-15 lead on a block assist from Curtice and Borgerding.
The two teams continued to go point-for-point but the Eagles were set point away at 24-23 on Williams' kill. That'd be their final point though as FBU collected the final three points, capped off by Borgerding's kill to give them the 26-24 set and match win.
The team will be back in action this weekend in conference play at Principia. They'll square off against MacMurray at 11 a.m., followed by a showdown against Principia at 1 p.m.
