ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team dropped a tough four set (18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 26-28) outing against Harris-Stowe State on Tuesday night.
The Griffins (8-17; 6-11 SLIAC), finished with 31 kills and 53 digs on the night, however, the team committed 18 reception errors.
Kristina Eason led them of the offensive side of the net with 13 kills and a .216 hitting percentage. Megan Schaller handed out 11 assists, while Megan McKenzie recorded a season-high 17 digs.
Harris-Stowe (4-10), meanwhile, concluded with 53 kills and that can be attributed to the 25 kill performance from Miaya Peacock. Setter Kennedy Netters led with 40 assists and on the defensive side of the net with 19 digs.
In the first set, a kill from McKenzie put the Griffins down 11-10. However, the Hornets responded with a 6-0 run to expand its advantage out to 17-10. FBU cut it down to six on multiple occasions but that'd be as close as they'd get with HSSU taking the opener, 25-18.
After a back-and-forth start to the second set, Fontbonne eventually took the lead at 12-11 on Eason's kill. Later in the set, a service error gave them some breathing room at 23-18, but the Hornets flew back in it at 24-21 on a block from Markell Jones. The Griffins were able to respond, though as Eason hammered home the kill giving them the 25-21 set win.
The third set didn't start out as the Griffins would've liked. The Hornets jumped out to a 10-3 lead on Peacock's kill. FBU got back in it by going on a 10-4 run as a kill from McKenzie made it a 14-13 game.
HSSU was able to gain some breathing room back at 22-17 on a Griffins service error and from there they were able to hang on for the 25-20 set win.
In the fourth, it was Harris-Stowe forcing the Griffins to dig out of an early hole as they led 9-3. Fontbonne continued to chip away at the lead and eventually its hard work paid off after tying it at 20-20 on Victoria Curtice's kill.
The two teams went point-for-point the rest of the way as a kill from Eason made it 26-26. However, the Hornets were able to take the final two points on a kill and ace from Tiffany Hopkins, allowing them to win the set and the match, 28-26.
The Griffins look to rebound tomorrow night at home against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. First-serve goes up at 7 p.m.
