ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (14-25, 22-25, 23-25) against Principia on Tuesday night.
The Griffins (2-6; 2-4 SLIAC), accumulated 34 kills, a .111 hitting percentage, and six blocks. Individually, Maura Rabun was the lone Griffin in double-digits with 10 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. She also got it done defensively with four blocks.
Megan Schaller handed out 19 assists, while Victoria Curtice contributed a team-high 17 digs.
Principia (7-2; 6-1 SLIAC), compiled 29 kills for a .119 hitting percentage. The Panthers took advantage from the service line with 12 aces and defensively had 60 digs. On the defensive side of the net, Noelle Shoemake was busy throughout the night, totaling a match-high 23 digs.
After trailing 14-12 in the first set, a kill from Emma Seiz and a bad set made it a 14-14 outing. Then, the Panthers rattled off an 11-0 run for the 25-14 win.
In the second, a Panthers attack error narrowed the deficit down to 13-11 for Fontbonne. Principia went on to expand its lead out to 22-17, but a 4-0 run, capped off by a kill from Kristina Eason, made it a 22-21 game. The Panthers, though fended off the Griffins surge and held on for the 25-22 set win.
In the third, the Panthers led 12-11, however, a service error, a kill from Olivia Tallo, a bad set, and a kill from Curtice put the home team ahead 15-12.
The team still maintained a 21-18 lead, though the Panthers crawled its way back into it and tied it at 22-22. The Griffins regained the advantage on Rabun's kill, but that'd be its last lead with Principia going on for the 25-23 set and match win.
Fontbonne will stay at home for a non-conference outing this Thursday against Illinois College. First-serve at 7 p.m.
