ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team dropped a tough straight set (12-25, 24-26, 21-25) outing against rival Webster on Wednesday night.
The Griffins (3-10; 3-7 SLIAC), compiled 30 kills and a .090 hitting percentage. Defensively, they were busy throughout the match with a season-high 70 digs in a three-set match. It's the Griffins highest dig total since they posted 72 against Principia in a five-set defeat.
Individually, Maura Rabun and Kristina Eason tied with seven kills each. On the defensive side of the net, Victoria Curtice, Megan Schaller, and Eason all tied with 14 digs each.
Webster (9-7; 7-2 SLIAC), won its fifth straight game by way of a sweep. The Gorloks totaled 50 kills and 16 errors for a .234 hitting percentage. They dished out 49 assists and came away with a season-high 96 digs in a three-set match.
Sarah Jacobs led the way with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Defensively, defensive specialist Kristen Farrah ended with a match-high 37 digs.
In the first, the Gorloks opened with a 12-2 lead and that forced the Griffins to take a timeout. It was all Webster the rest of the way with its match-high 18 kills for the 25-12 win.
In the second set, a kill from Abby Grumich put the Griffins down just 12-11. The Gorloks maintained its marginal lead as the set continued on and held a 23-21 advantage over Fontbonne.
Then, consecutive kills from Emma Seiz and Megan McKenzie tied it up at 23-23 and the Webster coaching staff called a timeout.
The two teams traded points once more before a kill from Samantha Kruse and a Griffins attack error gave Webster the 26-24 win.
After trailing 12-9 to open the third, the Griffins rattled off a 4-0 run capped off by Rabun's kill to give them a 14-12 lead. The Gorloks answered right back with a 4-0 run of its own as they were back on top, 16-14.
Despite the Griffins efforts, it was Webster fending off Fontbonne for the 25-21 set and match victory.
The team looks to bounce back this Saturday in a non-conference outing against St. Mary-of-the-Woods. First-service is set for 1:30 p.m.
