Griffins Earn Split Against MacMurray; Set Season-High 15 Service Aces In Win
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women’s volleyball team split the season series and won its first game in front of the home crowd after defeating MacMurray in four sets (25-15; 19-25, 25-15, 25-17).
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team split the season series and won its first game in front of the home crowd after defeating MacMurray in four sets (25-15; 19-25, 25-15, 25-17).
The Griffins (4-11; 4-7 SLIAC), totaled a season-high 48 kills in a four-set match and set a new season-high with 15 service aces. Individually, Kristina Eason had herself a night with 13 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, seven service aces, nine digs, and two block assists.
Megan McKenzie also had a strong night on the offensive side of the net with a season-high 12 kills and .500 hitting percentage.
Abby Grumich handed out a season-high 22 assists, while Sarah Borgerding led them in the dig department with 11.
MacMurray (7-16; 4-7 SLIAC), concluded with 29 kills, a .107 hitting percentage, and 12 block assists. Brooke Hadley and Mariah Market led with six kills each. Defensively, Alexis Moore compiled a match-high 17 digs.
In the first set, the Highlanders opened with a 14-10 lead on a bad set by the Griffins. Fontbonne answered with an 8-0 run on McKenzie's kill.
The Highlanders got the next point back, but the Griffins finished off the set on a 7-0 run to win the opener, 25-15.
In the second, it was a kill from McKenzie that narrowed the deficit down to 12-10. MacMurray gained some breathing room with the next four points and expanded its advantage out to 24-16. Fontbonne collected the next three points, but the comeback was not to be with MacMurray going on for the 25-19 win.
It was all Fontbonne in the third. The team grabbed a 14-5 lead on Eason's service ace and that forced the Highlanders staff to take a timeout.
The Griffins kept rolling from there and never looked back en route to the 25-15 win. It was an impressive display offensively by the Griffins in the third with its match-high 15 kills.
It was a back-and-forth outing in the fourth as both teams met-up at 14-14 on a kill from Eason. Then, Fontbonne collected the next five points to take the 19-14 lead.
It was all Griffins the rest of the way as a kill from Maura Rabun sent the crowd home happy with the 25-17 set and match win.
Fontbonne returns to the court on Wednesday night as they'll host Eureka College. First-service at 7 p.m.
