Women's Volleyball Earns Its Second Straight Win Against Eureka
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women’s volleyball team treated its fans to a four-set (25-15, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16) win against Eureka on Wednesday.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team treated its fans to a four-set (25-15, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16) win against Eureka on Wednesday.
The Griffins (5-11; 5-7 SLIAC), got it done on both sides of the net tonight. The team compiled 48 kills, set a season-high .220 hitting percentage, totaled 11 service aces, 56 digs, and tied its season-high with 14 block assists.
Individually, Emma Seiz broke out with a season-high 10 kills, a .350 hitting percentage and added three block assists. Kristina Eason contributed nine kills, a .316 hitting percentage, and 11 digs, while Victoria Curtice and Olivia Tallo had eight kills each.
Setter Megan Schaller dished out 22 assists, while Sarah Borgerding led with 12 digs. Daisy Watkins, meanwhile, finished with a career-high five service aces.
The Red Devils (3-18; 2-11 SLIAC), had 39 kills and 29 errors for a .052 hitting percentage. Lexi Dooley led with 13 kills and seven digs. Defensively, McKenna Cleer led with 13 digs.
In the first set, the Griffins went on a 3-0 run to take a 12-8 lead on a block assist from Maura Rabun and Victoria Curtice. It was all Fontbonne the rest of the way as they closed out the set on a 13-7 run for the 25-15 win.
The momentum carried over into the second set with the Griffins taking a commanding 15-5 lead on Curtice's kill. The Red Devils narrowed it down to 23-16, though a kill from Seiz and a service ace from Borgerding secured the 25-16 win.
In the third, it was the Red Devils opening with a 13-7 advantage on a Griffins service error. Eureka expanded its lead out to 24-16 on Runa Akagawa's kill.
Fontbonne answered with a 4-0 run, but a kill from Heather Robinson forced a fourth set with the 25-20 victory. After owning a negative hitting percentage in the previous two sets, the Red Devils had its best on the night with 13 kills and five errors for a .229 hitting percentage.
The fourth, however, went on to be the best on the night for Fontbonne. The two teams met-up at 9-9, then a 4-0 run by the home squad gave them something breathing room at 13-9 after consecutive kills by Schaller.
With the team totaling 14 kills and a match-high .273 hitting percentage, the Griffins never looked back and went on for the 25-16 set and match win.
The Griffins return to the court this Friday in Kansas City, Mo., against Bethany College at 4 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m., match against host Avila.
