Women's Volleyball Starts Fast But Falls In Four Against MacMurray

How It Happened
In the first set, the Griffins opened with a 10-8 lead on Jessica Molden's kill. Later in the set, the team led 23-16, but the Highlanders chipped away at the deficit and trailed 24-20 on a Fontbonne attacker error. However, Rae Andrews put away the set for good with a kill for the 25-20 victory.
In the second set, the Highlanders jumped out to a commanding 13-0 lead. They never looked back from there en route to the 25-10 win.
The third set turned out to be a wild one between the two teams where they combined for 35 kills. After leading throughout, the Griffins were on top 19-13. The Highlanders rattled off a 6-0 run to tie it up at 19-19 on Olivia Wall's kill.
Fontbonne went on a 4-0 run of its own and eventually were up 24-21 on Andrews' kill. The back-and-forth play continued with MacMurray going on a 4-0 run to take the 25-24 lead.
The two teams went point-for-point before meeting up once more at 27-27 on Maura Rabun's kill. However, a kill from Kamryn Flesner and a Fontbonne attack error gave the Highlanders the 29-27 win.
Fontbonne regrouped in the fourth set and took a 14-11 lead on a Highlanders attack error. MacMurray, though took a 17-16 lead on Caitlyn Hoene's kill and were able to go on for the 25-18 set and match win.
Inside The Numbers
- The Griffins set a season-high 46 kills in a four-set match. The team ended with a .156 hitting percentage.
- MacMurray concluded with 53 kills, a .229 hitting percentage, 11 service aces, and 65 digs.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Andrews recorded her seventh double-double on the year with 13 kills and 14 digs. Rabun added 11 kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
- Emma Seiz contributed 10 kills and a .296 hitting percentage.
- Setter Abby Grumich dished out 33 assists.
- Defensively, Megan Schaller led the group with a team-high 17 digs. Taylor Jackson added 10.
MacMurray Leaders
- Kamryn Flesner was the story on the night with a match-high 21 kills and a .227 hitting percentage.
- Gretchen Durbala handed out a match-high 37 assists and totaled 11 digs.
- Carissa Smith, who leads the SLIAC in digs, rounded out the evening with a match-high 26 digs.
