How It Happened
In the first set, the Panthers opened with an 11-8 lead, but the Griffins eventually tied it at 14-14 on a Panthers attack error. Later in the set, the Panthers were on top 21-17, though the Griffins battled back, finishing out the set on a 8-1 run as Taylor Jackson's kill gave them the 25-22 win.
In the second set, the two teams were all square at 15-15 on a Panthers kill from Jessica Bayne. Fontbonne gained some breathing room going on a 3-0 run. The teams went point-for-point the rest of the way, though a kill from Maura Rabun had the Griffins ahead, 27-26.
However, the Panthers finished out the set on a 3-0 run as a Greer Sprague service ace gave them the 29-27 victory.
In the third, the Griffins came out with a commanding 12-6 lead and that forced Principia to take a timeout. That didn't slow down Fontbonne with the team pushing its advantage out to 20-8 and going on for the 25-12 win.
It was another battle in the fourth set with Fontbonne grabbing an 11-10 lead on Rae Andrews kill. The Griffins continued to hold its marginal lead as the set wore on and were at match point, 24-22, on Rabun's kill.
The Panthers collected the next two points on Sarah Ungerleider's kill to stay alive. However, kills from both Jackson and Andrews secured the 26-24 set and match win.
